silappadhikaaram

.....a story of women of substance

Review in SIFY.com — April 2004

"To re-create a work of the Silappadhikaaram kind is tough. Tougher still is to compress and present it in just under two hours…yet one felt transported to former times when Kings were running the administration. There was nothing extravagant about it. Yet it was superbly simple. Indeed it left an emphatic effect on the audience as they trooped out of the Music Academy."

"Perhaps the coming together of the best talents had made the show a telling success….It helped to communicate the story..and its underlying message to an audience from diverse geographical, cultural and social backgrounds. There were absorbing scenes enacted intensely to reflect the context….Scenes depicting Indra's Pooja….scenes like the marketplace and finally the one where Kannagi sets ablaze the whole of Madurai….made for splendid performance."

"Narendra did a good choreography job. The script written by Kanimozhi was indeed crisp and suited the scenes that were enacted."

"What made this show stand out was the voice of Bombay Jayashri whose music brought the principal characters in this great work-Kannagi and Madhavi- alive on stage. This was perhaps the first time that this carnatic singer of repute tried her hand at composing music in a major way…..She has done it elegantly. Appropriate selection of ragas…helped bring realism on stage."

It is time talents are pooled and put to best use to present some of the finest works like the Silappadhikaaram ..not only within but also outside the country."
